Reflection – Fr. Michael Casagram – 9/7/25 – “Mary”

+(Intro) This morning we remember Mary in a special way on this first Saturday of the month. Mary invites us to grow ever deeper in our faith so as we begin this celebration so let us be sorry for the ways we may fail to co-operate with God’s plan for each of our lives

(After the gospel) In our first reading we heard of how God has reconciled us in the fleshly Body of Christ through his death. This fleshly Body he received from his holy mother Mary. We are to maintain our faith in this mystery so as to be living members of this Body.

I see Mary also reflected in our gospel when Jesus comes to the defense of his disciples who were doing what was unlawful on the sabbath according to the Pharisees. Jesus does not hesitate to defend the humanity of his disciples, the hunger that led them to pluck the grains of wheat and eat them after rubbing them in their hands. The humanity of Jesus stands out clearly, the humanity he received from his mother Mary.

But then he told the Pharisees  that “the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath” asserting his divinity which must have been even more baffling for them. It is a call to us all to walk in that faith that allows the love of Christ to fill the whole of our lives as it filled the life of our mother Mary.
