+What does Jesus mean when he says that he has come to set the earth on fire, and how he wishes it were already blazing. St Paul in his letter to the Ephesians gives us a good idea when, as we just heard, he asks our Father in heaven to grant the Ephesians “in accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self, that Christ may dwell in [their] hearts through faith..[and thus] to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that [they] may be filled with all the fullness of God.” What a wonderful hope of ours to be filled with the fullness of God!!
But for this to happen we have to face the divisions within our hearts, divisions within the society we live, divisions even within the Church. Some of the toughest words of all the gospels we’ve just heard, when Jesus tells us not to think he has come to establish peace on the earth, but rather division. Jesus would have us look into the depths of our hearts and to be honest about all that we find there. Only the heart filled with his love is free of all division.
