+(Intro)This morning we have the memorial of St Gregory, one of the outstanding social and ecclesial figures of his time. Let us remember our Brother Gregory on this feast that he may walk the path of his Patron. As we begin this celebration let us remember or sins and failing.
(After the Gospel) As I pondered this text I wondered how it might be reflected in the life of St Gregory? Certainly, like Jesus, St Gregory was one who spoke with authority because of the holiness of his life. Gregory has given us the only reliable life of St Benedict who is said to be the father of western monasticism.
As active as St Gregory was throughout his life, he did a prodigious amount of writing, his homilies on the Gospels and the Moralia on the book of Job. He knew the life of the Spirit, who as St Paul reminds us this morning, scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. We too, are being called to walk the path of the Holy Spirit, to be living witnesses of the life of Christ in our own day as complex as it is. In whatever predicament we may find ourselves, we can always turn to St Gregory for help and guidance.
