+HE DOES NOT RATION HIS GIFT OF THE SPIRIT
An aspect of our readings this morning is the call to discernment. Discernment in our everyday lives makes all the difference in the world. When Peter told the Sanhedrin that the God of their ancestors raised Jesus from the dead though they had him killed by hanging him on a tree, they were faced with a decision. They made a poor one.
Whether the words of our gospel this morning come from John the Baptist, from Jesus or the evangelist is uncertain. In any case they are a call to discernment for “whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.
Each day of our lives provides many opportunities to hear the word of God spoken to us by Jesus. Throughout the day he draws near and if we are attentive we are given a share in God’s own divine life through the Spirit. May we be ever attentive.
