+(Intro) Today we have the memorial of St Martin of Tours. He became a monk and started the first monastery in France. Was later made a bishop. In our reading from the book of Wisdom we will hear of how those who their trust in the Lord understand truth. As we begin this Eucharist, let us admit any failures of our own to trust in the Lord.
(After the gospel) It may be providential that as we gather here this morning, the Fall Plenary Assembly of Bishops is underway in Baltimore from the 10th to the 13th of this week. They will be election new leaders, including the conference’s president and vice president. Key topics on the agenda include discussing immigration enforcement, the ethical directives for Catholic health care, and the potential consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 2026. So let us pray for them in a special way.
As we heard at Vigils this morning, St Martin of Tours whole life was changed by his encounter with a poor, naked beggar out in the cold. His cutting his cloak in half and sharing it allowed him to realize a deep encounter with the living Christ. Isn’t this the mystery into which we are all called whenever we are faced with the poor or needy all around us, whatever form this poverty or need may take.
To do so is to realize the grace of God in our lives, to be numbered among those who know they are unprofitable servants, doing what we are obliged to do. Jesus is ever seeking to be at work in us and through us.
