+MARY AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS
It is memorial weekend when we remember all those who have given their lives in service of this country. It is fitting in every way, that we are remembering Mary this morning, as the Mother of the Church. How many mothers have suffered so deeply because of the death of their children in the service whether of this country or throughout the world
We have just heard from the gospel of John of how Mary stood at the foot of the cross as her Son goes through the most bitter passion and death. Hardly has this happened when a soldier “thrusts his lance into his side and immediately blood and water flowed out.” In that moment the Church was born as the great theologian Karl Rahner has so beautifully described.
This is a mystery we are all being called into, as living and active members of the Church. May we share in Mary’s deep and abiding faith for the future of all humankind.
