+(Intro) This morning we pray for the presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit as we prepare for our abbatial election. There is the responsibility of the one elected but also the cooperation of the community that will determine our future so let us be mindful of any failings of the past.
(After the gospel) The beatitudes are a wonderful summary of the whole gospel message. They are also a beautiful description of what St Benedict hoped to take place within a monastic community. To be poor in spirit, to mourn, be meek, hunger and thirst for righteousness, to be merciful and so on are what allows a community to thrive.
More than ever, we want to create a climate in which aspirants to our way life may find an atmosphere in which they can fully realize their calling. While it is certain, that all this requires our co-operation, it is the presence and working of the Holy Spirit that brings this all about.
So let us be confident that the Holy Spirit is in our midst to assist us with this abbatial election. And let us plead with our most loving God that we may fully co-operate not only with what will takes place with this election but in the promising future of the Gethsemani community.
