+COME TO ME ALL YOU WHO LABOR

Our gospel this morning is especially appropriate for this time of extra labor for the monks. Jesus wants us to rest in him, however heavy our labor may be at any time of our lives.

By reason of our baptism each one of us gathered here has been incorporated into the body of Christ, become living members of his Church. When we take his yoke upon us, we are never alone in carrying it, he is always at our sides, sharing in all the burden. As we learn to be meek and humble of heart we are endowed with a whole new source of energy and stamina for we are partnered with him in all that we undertake.

As Isaiah reminded us in the first reading, our Lord “does not faint nor grow weary, and his knowledge is beyond scrutiny. He gives strength to the fainting; for the weak he makes vigor abound. Clearly this is what he did in the life of St Lucy, making of her an outstanding example of a living faith amid much suffering. She maintained her integrity in the face of all who sought to harm her, becoming a light for all time.
