+THE WORD OF GOD AS LIVING AND ACTIVE

Our readings this morning come together in a wonderful way. The first from Hebrews tells us of how the word of God is living and active, discerning the reflections and thoughts of the heart. Then, in our gospel we have Jesus eating with tax collectors and sinners and the Pharisees objecting to this. Jesus, the living Word of God, sees what is going on in their hearts and tells them that he the divine physician has not come to call the righteous but sinners. Self-righteousness is the great block to spiritual growth.

The Divine Physician comes each day to call all of us to share in his own divine life, we have only to know our continual need. Each one of us here is being called like Levi sitting in his customs post, to be a friend of the living God. Acknowledging where we fall short of such intimacy, makes us to turn to our Divine Physician to receive healing. He sympathizes with our weaknesses, having himself been tested in every way though without sin. So let us approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace and timely help as Mary did.
