Fr. Michael’s Reflection – Discernment

Fr. Michael’s Reflection – Discernment

(Acts 5:27-33; John 3:31-36)

+The Catholic Study Bible tells us a striking thing about today’s gospel, that: “It is uncertain whether these are words by the Baptist, Jesus, or the evangelist.“ What is clear, is how these words invite all of us to be discerning in our conversations, as we listen to or watch the news, whether it is of earthly or heavenly origin, whether it is the voice of  truth about what is going on or is filled with fake news as happens all too often in our world today.

We just heard a striking example of this honest discernment in our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles where Peter and the Apostles were told by the Sanhedrin to stop teaching in Jesus’ name for fear of bringing this man’s blood upon them. Peter simply tells them how he and the Apostles “must obey God rather than men” a choice each one of us is called to make as we seek to be ever more attentive to God’s Word.
