Homily – Fr Michael Casagram 9/15/23 +Behold your Son, Behold your Mother

+Behold your Son, Behold your Mother  15 Sep.’23

This short gospel holds volumes of content. Jesus telling his mother that John was her son, and to John that Mary was his mother tells of Christ care for his mother but far, far more. Isn’t this all about the care we are to have for one another, especially among the suffering or our world.

One cannot help but think of all that lost loved ones in the recent fire in Hawaii, then of the close to 3000 lives lost because of the earthquake in Morocco and  the as many as 15,000 who lost in the awful flooding in Libya, Africa or of the now 500,000 who have lost their lives due to the war in Ukraine. What must be the pain of both young and old to have had loved ones who were suddenly been taken from them by these terrible events.

All our lives are intimately bound up with one another, a call to the whole human family to care for the loss, the abandoned, forsaken of our society. It is surely an invitation to enter into the love Jesus showed his mother, to appreciate what must have went through the heart of Mary when she saw how her Son was being treated by his own people. May we have the grace of their sensibility.
